I am lucky to know lots of wonderful “Dog People”, but let me tell you – Ashley is more than a dog person, she truly is a dedicated dog lover! Ashley volunteers at the local SPCA(Allen County SPCA) and also partners with local rescue groups. She takes in(she is a Foster Mom) dogs in need of some TLC until they find their forever home. She goes above and beyond by not only caring for them in a “normal home” environment but also by spending some time with them teaching them basic “manners” and basic commands.

This is the second foster of hers that I have photographed.

ADOPTED!

Another fur-baby has found her forever home!

I had Myra’s Foster mom give me her detailed story – so these are the words of Ashley D.

HISTORY: Myra’s story starts out very sad. She was picked up as a stray by animal control in Anderson, IN and she was taken to a very high kill shelter. To make matters worse, Myra had been hit by a car and drug under that car and had a horribly severed tail. In the shelter, they just wrapped her tail in a bandage but it was so painful to her that she tried to gnaw it off. Lucky Lab Rescue heard of this pretty girl at the shelter and they went and pulled her out; the first place they took her was to the vet. It was discovered that her tail was badly infected and mangled and they opted to amputate it. 3 days after her amputation, I went to the vet’s office in New Castle to pick her up and bring her to me for foster. I was expecting to find a scared, quiet, lethargic, and doped-up dog but as soon as Myra came around the corner, she smiled at me, came up to me, and licked my nose. I knew Myra was saying to me that she was thankful and when she jumped into the car, she looked like a dog that knew she was finally free. Myra has made a full recovery and she does just fine without her tail. Slowly but surely, her hair will grow back where it was shaved for surgery and to make up for not having a tail to wag, she wags the entire lower half of her body.

ABOUT: Myra is definitely a one-in-a-million dog and she is so sweet and loving. She is so eager to please and she is so well behaved. Myra is a dog that probably never was treated well or was taught any manners, yet you would never know it. She loves people and always wants to be next to you. She is eager to cuddle and nuzzle her nose into your neck but she is so gentle that it is never overwhelming. She is a dog that holds no grudges and is very resilient. Myra is the perfect combination of calm and play-when she is inside, she is calm and as soon as she gets outside, she can run as fast as a cheetah and romp and frolic like a deer. Myra gets along great with other dogs and her best friend is Orion the boxer. Orion tends to overwhelm other dogs because of his intense energy but his owner said that she has never seen him respond like he does with Myra-they play great but she calms him down and relaxes him…..she just has a great energy. Recently, I had another foster named Axle who was so scared in the shelter that he had to be carried out of his kennel to go out to potty. When he came to my house, he began to look to Myra for comfort and direction. She helped him through his first bath by standing at the side of the tub and nuzzling his face and licking his nose whenever he would look to her-it truly brought tears to my eyes. Within a couple hours of being here, Axle began to act like a pup with Myra and he did a complete 180…..he was adopted in less than a week!

Myra follows me everywhere and watches out for me. She cuddles with me during TV time and even at bedtime. She loves going for car rides and when I tell her to sit to get a treat; she looks up at me and tilts her head back so far that I always think she’s going to tip backwards! Myra makes me smile and laugh and she comforts me when I am upset…..somehow she just knows.

FUTURE: Myra has been adopted by a wonderful family in Massachusetts. She will spend her days with a stay-at-home mom who will take her on runs and she will have 3 kiddos to play with. Her family cannot wait to take her everywhere with them, including to Canada (where the parents are from), and to the ocean nearby. Myra will head out east at the end of the month to be with her new family. They cannot wait for her to get there and they love her already. I could not have hand-picked a more perfect match for her and I know she will have an amazing life. Myra truly is a rags-to-riches story and I will miss her dearly. She has taught me so many things that I never knew a dog could and she will always have a special place in my heart.
