The Fort Wayne Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” is a well-known favorite event for those of us in the Fort Wayne and surrounding areas. People of all ages come and enjoy this event every December.  Karen Gibbons-Brown is the Executive/Artistic Director at The Fort Wayne Ballet and this is the fourth year she has partnered with Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control(FW ACC). As a lover of animals, she is giving those dogs in need a voice. Two or three, usually different, adoptables from FW ACC come to each performance of The Nutcracker. The dogs are actually in the performance!

It is a privilege to live in a city that cares enough about those dogs in desperate need of a home – thank you FW Ballet!

Before each performance the dogs and volunteers from FW ACC(Big THANKS to all the volunteers) hang out behind stage. Many of the performers in The Nutcracker LOVE giving love and attention to the dogs before each performance. These dogs “are in heaven” with all the love and attention they receive for that hour before each performance! Look at his smile!

Karen starts each performance introducing herself, thanking all the sponsors, thanking the audience for attending and explaining the partnership with FW ACC. She gives the names and description of the dogs at each nights performance.

These adoptables are stars – the first time they walk out on the stage the “oo’s” and “awes” that fill the auditorium give me goosebumps! Most people are very surprised how well the dogs do on the stage during the “party scene”. This just proves how wonderful shelter dogs are! Click here to read more… These dogs may get passed by at the shelter, but once they are out of their cage and have an opportunity to shine, well, they shine bright!

During the first intermission there is a “meet and greet” for the audience to come and meet the adoptables. It is a joy to watch the dogs get lots of love and attention during this time. The people and children always look forward to this time of interaction. This is such a wonderful teaching opportunity for parents to show their children how to properly approach and pet a dog. Not only do these dogs here at The Nutcracker get adopted, but people are reminded about the many other dogs available at the shelter!

Thank You to the FW Ballet and FW ACC for allowing me to partner with you and capture all the special memories made here at this event. Make some chatter and spread the word – dogs in shelters and rescues can make a great addition to your home.
